Can we be flexible in exercise recommendations to people with MASLD?

People with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD) benefit from physical activity. But incorporating regular physical activity into the daily routines of patients with MASLD can be challenging due to time limitations and accessibility issues. These challenges are further compounded by the fatigue associated with MASLD. To support individuals with MASLD in initiating and maintaining physical activity, it is therefore essential to recommend activity patterns that are both effective and personalized to enhance adherence and long-term engagement. So far, it has been unclear if exercising during concentrated time over two days per week, for example, on weekends ("weekend warrior" style) is as effective as spreading it throughout the week. The study from the Global NASH/MASH Council (GNC) published in Liver International found that both weekend warriors and regularly active individuals had lower rates of MASLD, lower risk of heart disease, and lower mortality than those who were inactive. These results suggest that even concentrated bursts of exercise can provide major health benefits for people with MASLD.

Steatotic Liver Disease: Evolving from Static Diagnosis to a Dynamic Spectrum

Members of the Global NASH/MASH Council (GNC) are helping reframe Steatotic Liver Disease as a dynamic and evolving spectrum. In a recently published letter, Drs. Zobair M. Younossi, Shira Zelber-Sagi and Aleksander Krag share their expert insights on the future of this significant liver disease. Their perspective highlights the urgent need for a unified approach to diagnosis, management, and global awareness. Download PDF version

Global NASH/MASH Council (GNC) Meeting at INASL 2025 Annual Conference

The Global NASH/MASH Council (GNC) convened a highly productive meeting during the 33rd Annual Conference of the Indian National Association for the Study of the Liver (INASL), held August 7–10, 2025, in Chandigarh, India. Focusing on the impact of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in South and Southeast Asia, the 3.5-hour session brought together leading hepatology experts from across the region. Opening remarks were delivered by Professor Ajay Duseja (Secretary General, INASL), Professor Radha K. Dhiman (President, INASL), and Professor Zobair M. Younossi (Chairman, GNC). The meeting highlighted the escalating burden of MASLD/MASH and laid the groundwork for expanded regional and global collaboration. Discussions are expected to foster impactful partnerships to advance research, increase disease awareness, and improve treatment strategies not only within South and Southeast Asia, but also in other regions represented by the GNC. The Global NASH/MASH and Global Liver Council Meetings During ILC 2025 in Amsterdam

GNC and GLC had another very successful meeting during ILC 2025 with over 70 members participating. The meeting was full of exciting reports related to the projects of different GNC/GLC committees. Additionally, an in-depth 3 hours meeting was dedicated to MASLD/SLD discussing NIT algorithms in clinical practice, awareness challenges, patient perspective about MASLD, preventive hepatology and Burden of Disease/Cost of Inaction for MASLD. These discussions will lead to more projects helping to move the field forward as well as recommendations to policy makers about actions that are needed to deal with MASLD at a global level.
